Grand Finale

well, i've been home for almost a week now, but i am still in denial so i've been putting off writing my final entry.

my last week in australia was amazing, and made me never want to leave. i had three finals, two that i had to go to and one that i took online. other than that i pretty much chilled with my friends pretty hard, savoring our last moments in the sun. we laid out on the balcony and tanned every day, went down to the pool, to the beach... the usual and all the things i am missing so terribly right now.

on friday kathleen's parents came and on saturday they drove us to burleigh heads beach and then brought us over to their apartment in surfers for some good eats. i loved having family visits. saturday was my very last night in australia, and i had to be on the bus to the airport at 5:30 a.m. so obviously i decided to just stay up and go out instead of sleeping, as i would have plenty of time to sleep on the 13 hour plane ride home, and only one last night with my friends in oz. so we went out to fiddler's and then ruby tramp, a live music irish pub and then a nightclub; the usual night in surfers.. haha.

it was a terrific last night except for when i fell into a man hole. here is what happened: i walking and texting (don't do this at home) and my friend bill was trying to get my attention but i was not really paying attention. when i finally looked up at him, it was too late. i fell into a hole. it was painful, and probably ridiculously embarrassing, but i have some pretty bad ass bruises to show for it. ask to see them. i may show you. i had to force everyone to leave around 4:30 so i could get back to school and pack up and get on the bus. luckily one of the girls i with got kicked out around that time for dancing shoe-less on a table and trying to steal a picture off of the wall.

so i said all my tearful (and by tearful, i mean i was crying on the inside) goodbyes and got on the bus, still in a state of toxic delirium.  i passed out, and arrived an hour later at the brisbane airport. luckily none of the girls i was flying with had gone out the night before so they could help me re pack my bags when they were over the weight limit and the lady wouldn't just let me pay for the extra weight. i was a messss...

however, my sunday travels were far from over. our flight to LAX was supposed to leave at 9:50 a.m. but got delayed until 11:30. we made it to LA 1 1/2 hours late and missed our connecting flight to chicago so we got put on standby, but sunday is a ridiculous day to try to get to chicago so we didn't get out of LAX until 2:00 p.m. (that's 5 hours later, in case you were confused by the time difference). however, when we got to chicago we found out that our original flight from chicago to green bay had already been cancelled because of the weather conditions so we wouldn't have made it out that night anyway. well, we had had enough traveling after 31 hours and just wanted to go home. so kathryn, alicia, and i took a 1 1/2 bus ride to milwaukee where my mom picked me up and drove me 4 hours home.

that brings us to approximately 5 a.m. on monday. no worries though, i wasn't even a little tired as in my mind/body it was only 8p.m. (australian time). needless to say the jeglag has been killing me all week, and i've been really sick, hopefully not with the swine flu. i miss australia terribly already and am just trying not to think about it too much at this point. i am super excited to see all my friends in ripon this weekend, and to turn 21. honestly it's the only thing keeping me going...

peace & loves.

17 April

another crazy week and i have no idea where it has gone! last week was my last week of classes, which was exciting/bittersweet because it means i only have two weeks left here. i can't believe it. last friday was good friday which is apparently a very big deal here in oz because everything was closed. i kid you not, not even the food places on campus were open, we couldn't go to the gym or lay by the pool... it was ridiculous. the weather was not too nice either, so we were stuck inside most of the day watching movies and bumming around.

however, casey and lauren and i got a little restless by dinner time and decided to go on an adventure to mudgeeraba. it is one of the buses that goes from campus, but i have only ever taken it as far as the robina towne centre or possibly the nerang rail (the train). we wanted to see a little bit of mudgeeraba, and hopefully grab a bite to eat whilst we were at it.  well, we arrived in mudgeeraba and discovered that it, too, was completely closed up and there was absolutely nothing for us to see/do/eat. however, we reached the end of the route so we had to get off. luckily, the mudgey bus turned into the seaworld bus so we got back on the bus and decided to go into surfers. it was a very long ride because when we finally got off the bus in surfers EVERYTHING was open! it was very exciting. our next task was to find mexican food, since we were all in the mood. not so easy, as the closest mexican restaurant is not really within walking distance of cavil ave. and kind of off of the main strip. so we ended up going to pancakes in paradise instead, which turned out to be a very nice idea. yum. then we got back on the bus and returned to bond.

saturday was another not so exciting day, a lot of chillin pretty hard, but SUNDAY kathryn, casey, lauren and i rented a car and drove down to byron bay for the east coast blues & roots music festival featuring missy higgins, jason mraz, and ben harper! we only got tickets for monday since it was kind of expens, so on sunday we met up with my friend kathleen and her brother and his gf who came for a visit. we walked around town a little, grabbed a bite to eat at our hostel, and then casey and i played tour guide of our favorite place in australia! byron bill even re-entered our lives for a min.. hahaha...

monday it was POURING rain all day long so after breakfast we went on a quest for rain boots, which seemed to be what everyone else had deemed appropriate outwear for bluesfest, as it was being held in a mud pit because of all the rain. however, we couldn't find any cheap enough so we went with some cheap flip flops, which were immediately ditched as soon as we tried to trudge through calve-deep mud puddles. despite the monsoon, however, the festival was superrr fun. missy higgins was amazing, and jason mraz was good as well. ben harper was good, but i thought could have been better. he was being a little emo, and didn't play any of the songs i know and love by him. nonetheless, it was a pretty sweet time. we got back to our hostel around 1 a.m., climbed in the shower to scrape the mud off our bodies, and went straight to bed as all of us were dying of exhaustion by that point.

the next morning we got brek at twisted sista, did a little walking around, chillin at the beach with about a million other people on tuesday afternoon. i am telling you, this place is legit. early afternoon we finally decided we had to head back to the gold coast because lauren's dad and brother were coming to visit and since lauren didn't have a phone he hadn't really been able to get a hold of her and may or may not have been a bit concerned about her whereabouts. i loveee meeting everybody's families, especially parents, because i forget how much i miss having real adults/parents around sometimes. sooo yesterday (thursday) a bunch of us went over to where lauren's fam was staying and we hung out at the beach while we waited for them to get back from skydiving in byron bay. we ate a ton of food, and just chilled in this super nice apt. in surfer's. good times.

the weather has been soooo much nicer lately, after having straight rain for almost two weeks. i guess it is nearing the rainy season, but supposedly it hasn't even been raining that much compared to how much it usually rains this time of year. whatevs, as long as i leave here tan i am a happy girl. =] tonight i think i am going to my first rugby game, which should be exciting, and tomorrow i am going to brisbane with casey. then i may have to buckle down slightly and make some sort of attempt to study for finals. we'll see...

9 April

it was sooo good to see my fam last weekend! they got here on friday afternoon, and casey and i took the bus into surfers to see them. turns out their hotel was actually on the other side of surfers, so it was a lonngggg ride, and we were def the only people left on the bus by the time we arrived at the sheraton mirage. it was all good though because they took us out to dinner for some seafood buffet. =)

after din we left my fam to rest for the night, as they had been traveling for about two days, and the time difference and jet leg can really get a girl down the first day/night. casey and i decided that we would stop in surfers for a drink since we were already there, so we went to .o'malleys where, wouldn't you believe it, a cricket team was celebrating the end of their season. they came all the way from melbourne! we were like, omg we were just there last weekend and loveddd it. then of course they bought us lots of pitchers of beer, and you know you can't just leave when you're getting free drinks like that so we made it kind of a big night, especially for a friday. funnn.

saturday morning i got up and went back into surfers to show the fam around. i've never really walked around there in the daylight too much, so it was just as interesting for me as it was for them. we had some brekk and then walked around and did a little shopping and people watching. it was fun. then i thought that i would take them into broadbeach for some din, but when we got there it was not what we were expecting so we decided to go see if we could get into the benihana's back in surfers. fail. so we ended up walking back into surfers to go to a little italian place. it was delish though.  after din i quick went back to the hotel to change and clean myself up a little bit before heading BACK into surfers to meet up with some friends at waxy's for night two. =) i've never spent so much time in that place before..

sunday the fam came and picked me up at school and we headed over to byron, which is one thing i insisted they absolutely must do when they were here seeing as it is my fave place in the entire world. we got there just as it was starting to get real hot out, and i took them down to the market. then my dad and brother went to the beach and my mom and sis and i walked around town, doing more shopping and people watching. they tried some kebabs and were impressed, i think. we headed out just as it was starting to rain [again] and they came back to bond so i could give them a little tour of my place of residence.  we walked into market square to get some food, but since it was sunday everything was closing pretty early, so they decided to just go back to their hotel to get some eats. i stayed here to get some rest cause i was tireddd.

monday i met the mom and sis at pac fair while my brother and dad stayed back at the hotel to lay by the pool. sydney was looking for a dress for senior tea, but apparently the mom and sis aren't loving aussie style so they didn't find much. oh wellll... then as dwe went back to the hotel to rest for a bit before din, then finally made it to benihana's which was delish. then i came back to get some sleeep. tuesday i had to get up real early to go see the fam off, which was sad to see them go already! but now they are up in port douglas doing some adventurngous things like rainforest and sailing trips. hopefully it is nice weather there! then they are heading to sydney this weekend and then going home! what a short trip.

i, on the other hand, only have two more weeks here so i intend to make them count!

the Great Ocean Road

soooo last weekend my friends and i decided that we were over the gold coast and wanted to go to melbourne for the weekend.  we also decided that while in melbourne, we wanted to take a road trip as none of us ever get to drive anymore, and hardly ever get to ride in cars anymore.  it's a weird thing to miss, but nonetheless... we wanted to rent a car, but you have to be 21 to do so. at first it was fine because there were 5 of us that were going to go, and two of those people are 21.  however, due to classes and other such work commitments (really?!) neither of them could go.  so here we were, tuesday afternoon, three 20-year-olds trying to figure out how we were going to get around this interesting ordeal we found ourselves in.  this is where the breezer comes in.

even with companies like wicked campers and stuff like that, you have to be at least 21 to hire out, and it has to be for at least 5 days.  however, there was one veryyy sketch place we found where you only had to be 18.  so of course we went with it, and soon enough casey, lauren and i found ourselves in melbourne on a friday afternoon, hiring out a campervan for the weekend.  casey and i got there first because lauren had to fly standby from brisbane, so we decided to go get the campervan and pick up some supplies while we waited for her.  so we got all the paperwork filled out, got all packed up into our campervan, and jumped in the front seat ready to go... and couldn't get it started.  embarrassed, we went back into the rental place and asked how we were supposed to get the vehicle started.  the woman replied, the clutch of course, it's on the far left-hand side.  the clutch?  that's correct.  the campervan is manual.  so casey and i got back out into the campervan and stared down where, sure enough, there was a stick shift and a clutch on the far left-hand side.

obviously neither of us know how to drive manual, so we once again found ourselves in quite the interesting situation.  frantically, we started calling some friends to try and get ourselves a quick over-the-phone lesson on how to drive a manual.  finally matias answered his phone, and when we told him our situation, he warily began to explain how one drives a stick-shift.  mid-lesson, however, he stops and says, "listen you guys, i really don't think this is a good idea." not disagreeing, we decided to go back into the rental place and ask them to just take the campervan back and get a refund.  however, because it was so last-minute, it would have been considered a cancellation and we wouldn't have gotten a cent of our $400 back.  so a decision had to be made; either we were out $400 and were going to have to just figure out something else to do in melbourne for the weekend, or we were going to suck it up and casey was going to learn to drive a manual.

well, obviously we chose the second option, so we get back on the phone with matias, explain to him the situation, and he begrudgingly gives us a lesson on how to drive manual.  very very veryyyy nervously we finally decide casey is ready to exit the parking lot, and we drive out and into a larger car park next door, at the central west shopping centre, in the town of braybrook, the sketchiest suburb in all of melbourne, i am positive.  we spend the next three hours, still waiting for lauren, driving in circles around the car park in braybrook, practicing starting and stopping, slowing down, etc.  finally, lauren arrives, we tell her the situation, and she is extremely nervous, as we all were at this point, but of course goes with it.  feeling confident(-ish), we go to aldi for some supplies; bread, pb&j, some breakfast bubbles, milk, chips, cookies, and a few boxes of goon.

finally ready to head out on the road, we begin our journey toward our destination for the night: geelong. we arrive before dark, but not before realizing that although we have a bed to sleep in for the night, we have no where to park it.  there are no open caravan parks in geelong, but even if there were we would have to pay for them, and that kind of defeats the purpose of the campervan. sooo we drive drive around for a while, stall in the middle of an intersection, and halfway up at a hill at a stoplight, casey has a couple meltdowns... and then finally we find ourselves at a dead-end road on a cliff over looking the ocean, in the parking lot of a church.  perfect.  we park the breezer, get out to stretch our legs, bathroom break, and get started on the goon.

by this time we were all absolutely exhausted by our travels we decide against making the trek back into town and have our very own bonding sess in bed.  did i mention that the back of the breezer is a cage? that's funny... the campervan is really only for two people, which is why it is so cheap, so there are no seats/seatbelts in the back, just the bed, which we folded up during the daytime for seating for lauren.  i, of course, had to sit up in the front with casey to navigate/keep her calm so lauren sat in the back, in the cage, like a locked-up feral child.  not a big deal, but pretty key looking back...  so anyway, we're chillin in bed, drinking our goon, when cars start randomly coming to park on cliff st. over looking the ocean.  who knew church parking lots also doubled as make-out points?  needless to say, we had some interesting visitors that friday night...

the next morning we woke up extremely early, as we were all a little bit anxious about the day ahead, and a little nervous that we had a ticket.  however, we did not so not to worry.  we had some breakfast bubbs & pbj for breakfast, then walked down the hill to a park where we got to wash ourselves a bit.  then we packed up the breezer and went back into the geelong to give ourselves a little walking tour.  we had some coffee at an adorable little cafe on the beach, went to cunningham pier, and then made a little trek to the national wool museum where we, luckily, met some kind old men who gave us the most amazing directions for the great ocean road, and to whom i will be eternally grateful, as we may not have made the journey without them.  after talking to them we were excited to get on our way, so we got back into the breezer and headed off for our next destination: queenscliff.

queenscliff is an adorable little colonial town consisting of all old people and war museums and memorials.  we walked around checking out all the history, which we don't get at all on the gold coast, the white picket fences, and B&B's... it was adorable.  we stopped at the courtyard, an adorable little cafe in a garden, for some sandwiches and coffee, and then back to the breezer and off we went... we drove through the bellarine, vineyard country overlooking port philip bay, through more adorable towns and scenic sights like point lonsdale, ocean grove, barwon heads... we got stuck in a little bit of traffic in torquay, a surfing town of the famous bells beach where surf brands like cult and rip curl originated. turns out the traffic was because of a bicycle race that was going on that saturday afternoon, so that was terrifying driving on coastal highway trying not to kill any cyclists.

we continued on thorugh anglesea, aireys inlet, and somewhere between there and lorne we came across some remains of the victoria bushfires that have been raging on down there pretty much the entire time i've been in this country.  the fires were contained, but it was terrifying to see, and so sad. plus all the cyclists had to bike through that nasty smoke, which couldn't have been good for them.  our next stop was lorne, another surfside town that reminded me of coolangatta beach on the gold coast. lorne is the home of eskrine falls, which was our next stop.  however, to get to eskrine falls, you first have to drive up the steepest hill i have ever seen in my life, on which we stalled and began rolling backward into oncoming traffic. terrified, casey somehow got the car turned around and we rolled down the hill forward, at least.  after a small meltdown, we realized that matias had not covered driving uphill in his lesson, so we called our friend natalya, who freaked out and then explained that in order to drive uphill you have to be in the lowest gear possible. good to know. she also informed us that after we had talked to matias  and a few others the day before, everyone back at school was terrified for our lives and we needed to check in more often so they knew were still alive.  check.

okay, so we finally made it up the hill, however, when we got to great otway national park to turn down the road to eskrine falls we realized that we would be doing a little off-road down the second steepest hill i have ever seen in my life.  no big deal.  we made it to the falls; it was gorgeous, reminded me of fern gully.  made back up the hill no prob in first gear, and continued on our merry way along the great ocean road.

we didn't have any more stops to make before our final destination for the night, so we were pretty excited that we just go to drive for a little while and enjoy the scenery. little did we know that the entire drive from lorne to apollo bay would be ocean highway aka the hilliest, curviest, scariest roads in the entire world, over looking a cliff down to the ocean the entire way.  and of course, because that wasn't exciting enough, we got attacked by a biker gang heading up to queenscliff, more of the cyclists who were coming from god-knows-where... but we did pull over randomly on the side of the road for a quick breath and saw some wild koalas. don't exactly get to see that every day, eh?

well, needless to say we finally made it to apollo bay, and were faced yet again with the ordeal of finding a free, probably illegal, but sketchy enough place to sleep that we wouldn't get fined or murdered. we pulled into a "caravan park" which eerily resembled a trailer park, but we were too sketched out to do anything else so lauren went in to talk to them about prices and such.  she came back out to converse with us, but by the time we went back to book a spot, they had just given away the last one. sooo they directed us to a campground, which turned out to be half the price and sooo much better. and it just so happened to work out apollo bay music festival was going on that very weekend, so we picked the most bumpin' night of the year to spend the night. perfect.  we had to scale this giant hill to get into the actual town, but it was so well worth it, so much fun.  partying on the gold coast is a blast, usually, but there are so many american and tourists that it can get kinda old pretty fast.  it was fun for once to be the only americans at this australian bar.  so much fun.

the next morning we got up and had the standard breakfast bubbs & pbj breakfast, and then had to gas up at the petrol station, get some coffee, and we were off to our next destination: bimbi park and the camp otway lightstation.  we saw some more wild koalas, but we had to pay to go to the lighstation, so we snuck in the back way up the great ocean walk.  we still got to see the lighthouse and the cape otway, so all people trying to rip off innocent tourists can suck it.  our next stop was the otway treetop walk, about 30 minutes out of our way. however, when we got there we had to pay as well! so we just enjoyed some iced coffees at the otway treetop cafe, and then went back on our merry way.

next stop, princetown and the twelve apostles.  however, when we arrived in princetown we were a little surprised that all the town consisted of was a convenience store/petrol station/cafe.  we went in to get some snacks, and asked if we were in the right place. we were not, we had to drive a little bit further down the road, thank goodness because the twelve apostles was our last and biggest stop of the trip and it had been talked up so much that i would have been incredibly disappointed in what princetown had to offer us.  eventually, after stalling on a blind corner into oncoming traffic, we made it to the twelve apostles, which was gorgeous, and filled with asian tour groups, always a treat.

after the twelve apostles, it was time to head to port campbell, the port campbell national park, and off of the great ocean road, back up toward geelong.  i must say, it was not such an exciting drive through the farmland/countryside of victoria, but we sang some taylor swift and play a rousing game of sex, drugs and rock n roll which kept us busy for a while. not to mention the twelve maps i had on my lap to ensure i was navigating us in the correct direction.  after a few hours we finally made it to the town of colac where, coincidentally, some of the fellows we had met the night before in apollo bay were from.  we made a pit stop at macca's for a snack and then continued on to geelong.

by the time we reached geelong we gassed up again and realized that we still had an hour or so of sunlight, so we decided to continue on to melbourne, our final final destination. however, we once again had nowhere to sleep so by the time we did some scary scary driving around the cbd of melbourne (did i mention it was scary?) we accidentally pulled over into the parking lot of a beach in st. kilda where, wouldn't luck just have it, there about five other campervans just parked in various spots.  we went over to talk to a few of them to ask about the situation, and they said they had been sleeping there for a couple nights already and hadn't gotten fines or had to pay anything so, perfect!  we pulled up and joined our homeless friends.  indeed, we may have just made a lifestyle choice.

the next morning we woke up on the beach, again, washed ourselves, had some brekky, and took a little walk along the beach to a cafe, and to decide what we were going to do with ourselves for the rest of the day.  we decided to take the campervan back to braybrook, and then take a bus back into the city to do a little exploring until our flight at 6:30. when we make it to the city we decide to walk to lygon st., as that is where our study abroad advisor told us we absolutely must go when in melbourne.  let me just say, i was not impressed. however, we did have some delish lunch, which, after pbj, chips, and breakfast bubbles for three days, probably anything would have been more appetizing.

for our next and final adventure of the weekend, casey insisted that we find the dan o'connell (her dad's name) hotel on canning st. so we walked for about 700 miles, asked all kinds of people, and thought for a very long time that this was a very made up place. however, we did find it, and then needed very badly to take the tram back into the cbd, as lauren had left her mobile at the pharmacy we stopped at when we first arrived to town to get directions.

when we finally made it back, we stopped at a cafe across the street for some beverages, and then headed to the train station where we had to catch a skybus back to the airport. sat at the airport just long enough to become exhausted, drank the rest of our leftover goon, hopped on the plane, and home we went back to the gold coast. what an adventureee

16 March

another week already... well, i recovered from mardi gras just in time to celebrate my friend's 21st birthday on tuesday night.  he lives in my corridor so we had the biggest party the AC:CR has ever seen!  it was insanely hot, and i spent most of the party with my head out the window while everyone else played circle of death and peer pong (with water, so as not to make a mess...).  finally we moved the party over to varsity tavern, a short walk from campus, to continue the celebration of matias's day of birth.

i think i told you about the rest of my "spring break" activities already so moving on to this past weekend... it was finally SUNNY!  on saturday kathryn and i sat down by the pool the wholeee dayyy, it was so fabulous.  the only bummer was that there was a brewery tour going on the same day that BASIC was hosting (beer appreciation and social intercourse club) because it was supposed to be rainy weather all weekend.  i really wanted to go, but couldn't risk missing out on the first sunny day in so many days!  luckily, sunday was sunny too!  kathryn and i went to burleigh beach, my second favorite only to main beach in byron bay, to do a little shopping and more basking in the sun.  i bought a really sweet dress from my new favorite store/art gallery called inverse.  this lady that works at a restaurant down the street makes these dresses from vintage scarves that she collects on her travels, so they're all one of a kind.  so coool.

today is ANOTHER sunny day, but i had to do some work as i put it all off this weekend to lay out in the sun.  i'm pretty behind in my lab assignments, so i'm probably going to be spending a couple of hours in the library/lab =(.  tomorrow night is a st. patrick's day celebration, so i have to get everything done by then! xx

13 March

i looked at all the pics from crush party and for the first time have been just the slightest bit homesick... i absolutely looovee it here, but i miss you girls more than you'll ever know.  that being said...

since we don't have spring break here at bond uni, we declared this week (and by this week, i mean since last thursday night when we left for sydney) our spring break.  i skipped all of my classes (some on purpose, others because i was still asleep/in bed) except for one where they take attendance...  instead of going to class i did massive amounts of spring break activities.  on wednesday i went to broadbeach to hang out with my friend, lauren's, sister who came to visit for her actual spring break, and her friend.  we went out to surfers, but wednesday night is not a big party night so we ended up at this bar called the avenue with a bunch of creepy old men.  very wisconsin-esque.

it was fun though, and i ended up sleeping at the apartment lauren's sister was renting for the week.  i slept on the little couch and lauren, who is a good six inches shorter, got to sprawl out on the big couch.  needless to say, i got a fabulous night's sleep. casey brought a sheet from her bed here at school to sleep on the floor, so kathleen and her snuggled under that.  the next morning we all awoke in a shambles, borrowed some swimsuits/cover-ups/sunscreen, etc. from lauren's sister and friend and went to the beach on the first "nice" day they've had all spring break.  kind of sad, but it's been raining a lot lately so we jumped at the chance to go lay out for a while, even though it was kind of chilly and overcast.

we took the sheet that casey had brought for her night's sleep on the floor and all laied on that because none of us had towels.  when we finally got too cold to lay there anymore, we went back to the apartment to sit in the hot tub for a while.  there was a really hilarious small child that came and hung out with us while her parents watched on suspiciously...  so we left the hot tub and came back to school for our 77th night of spring break-ing in a row.  maybe not that many, but it seems like it, it's been a long couple of weeks.

anyway, that is all for now.  today was a chill day.  i walked three miles to burleigh waters with kathryn to look for her keys that she lost when she was on a run the other day.  we didn't find it, but it was a nice little stroll. then we watched a lot of hours of sex & the city and movies.  it's been very rainy lately, i hope the weather gets better soon so i can play outside again.

Mardi Gras

oooh i should have written a post sooner, as memories already fade fast about my past weekend.  well, i will do my best to fill you in on all the happenings.

we left the gold coast at 8:00pm on thursday night and hopped on a coach bus for what we were told would be a 10 hour drive.  as if 10 hours isn't bad enough, it was a lie.  more like 12 1/2.  the bus had to stop every 2 1/2 - 3 hours for the bus drivers to switch off, and bathroom breaks for the 200+ students i was traveling with.  i took some dramamine and slept most of the way, but of course sleeping on a bus is not a great sleep and i was exhausted when we arrived in sydney on friday morning around 9 am.  we got to grab some brekky, move our stuff into one of two rooms, and change our clothes, wash our faces, etc. very quickly before our tour guides took us on a walk around the city.

we were exhausted, but the walk was still pretty sweet.  we got to walk through hyde park, the royal botanical gardens, up the steps of the opera house, and on top of the harbour bridge which was terrifying, not only because i am afraid of heights but also because it was a windy windy day way up there and i was pretty convinced i was going to fall off into the ocean and wash up somewhere in melbourne.  it did not happen, don't be alarmed.

we stopped at a food court at a mall to get some lunch.  i ate at healthy choices, which they have  at pretty much every mall around here.  they make fresh sandwiches and salads and stuff and are way more delicious and healthy than... say... macca's or something.  hehe, macca's is what they call mcdonald's here, fyi. =]

after the walk was complete we got to move into our rooms in the hostel, which, turns out, my room was one of the rooms where people were keeping their stuff for the morning, so i was trying to take a quick blink and there were people walking in and out all over the place trying to get their stuff situated.  finally we got showered and dressed up and ready for the activities for the night aka booze cruise in the harbour.  the entire time we just floated back and forth under the harbour bridge and past the opera house and all the beautiful city lights and had to keep telling myself, girl you are in sydney, australia because it was just so unbelievable.

the next day was an optional "hike" in the blue mountains, about an 1 1/2 bus ride away from our hostel in downtown chinatown.  my friends and i opted out of the hike and decided to take a walk around darling harbour.  on the way there we stopped at paddy's market to find some supplies (aka bright green afro wig) for mardi gras.  then we accidentally wandered through festival indonesia which was interesting.  we stopped for a bit to listen to some legit indonesian music and check out some of the snacks they had set up, although did not actually try any of them.  we went further down the boardwalk and had a drink for lunch, ran into some friends who were also in sydney for the weekend, and basically just had a very chill, relaxing afternoon in preparation for the night ahead.

well, if you haven't seen the pics on facebook i suggest you look at them because there is really no way that i can do the things that i saw justice in writing.  and those pictures aren't even the half of it - i can only capture so much, i am only one person.  we had dinner at the gaf, a bar right off of oxford street where the parade was held.  so we got to eat dinner and have drinks while the parade raged on only feet away from us.  it was absolute insanity.  it was difficult to see a lot of the parade because there were so many people lined up on the street and there weren't as many floats as just men in butt-less chaps dancing down the street.  did i mention mardi gras in sydney is also the gay and lesbian pride parade?  right.  that may or may not change things.

after some dinner and drinks we walked around a bit to try to get a better view, and then stopped at another bar to rest.  we met some nice australian boys from sydney who said they would be happy to take us to a club, wallaby, in darling harbour.  they promised it was just a short walk.  they are liars.  i still do not believe that they are even from sydney because they had no idea how to get to darling harbour, and the walk felt like it took hours.  and to make things even more ridiculous, one of them thought he needed to take a bathroom break behind a bush, and almost got us all arrested by the rangers. ughhh.  well, needless to say we made it to the club and ended up having a very fun and exciting time.  dancing the night away and such. you get the idea.

the next morning we got up bright and early to pack up the buses, grab some brekky, and head off for a cliff walk along the beaches.  we saw tamarama, bronte, bondi... i apologize i can't remember them all but they were beautiful.  it was kind of an overcast day so the air was nice and cool, and i got some pretty fabulous pictures overlooking the ocean.  well, by the time we got to our final destination, bondi beach, famous for, among other things, the reality tv show bondi rescue, which one of our tour guides is actually on.  so, turns out i met a famous australian reality tv star.  too bad i've never seen the show, or any show for that matter as i do not have a tv.

sadly, it began to rain shortly after we arrived to the beach so we took a short walk around the boardwalk, went to a market which was cool and i could have spent hours at if not for the rain, so we ended up going to hotel bondi, where we had a few drinks and sat for six hours watching and trying to figure out the cricket game that was happening on the tv in the bar.  cricket is a very confusing sport, which is why i think it has never became popular in the states.  not to mention it is the most boring to ever to watch.  it's kind of like baseball, but even baseball seems exciting compared to cricket.  anyway, that was quite the long afternoon, but we had some dinner and around 7:30 hopped on the bus for the 12 hour bus ride home.

we arrived home around 6:30 on monday morning and i lugged my suitcases up into my room, into my bed, and crashed, still wearing my bathing suit full of sand and cover up.  i woke several hours later spooning my suitcase in a puddle of sand.  there is no other way the weekend could have ended.  it was fabulous.  i love sydney and want to move there forever.  the end.

Australia Zoo

yesterday (Sunday) i went to the australia zoo! it is steve irwin's zoo, which his wife, terri, and daughter, bindi have taken over.  it was originally created for conservation purposes, to protect endangered animals, as well as educate about the animals in australia.  i have never really liked zoos before, but i had a blast yesterday!  the only downside was that we had to be on the bus at 7:45 am, and the bus ride was about 2 hours north of us, in noosa.

however, once we arrived there, we grabbed a snack at "feeding frenzy", the food court, and then we were ready to see the animals!  the first thing we did was go to a show called "wildlife warriors!" where we got to see some birds, elephants, and crocodiles.  the zoo keepers fed the croc right in front of us, and one of the zoo keepers hid behind a bush the entire time.  i have no idea what he was doing, it was so weird.  and i got to see a baby croc right up close!  they're pretty cute, i guess...

then we were on our own for the next four hours... we saw every animal you can imagine, koalas, weird birds, and of course, kangaroos!  we probably spent the most time with the kangas because we got to feed them and pet them and be right up in their faces.  we even saw a mama kanga with a baby joey in it's pouch!  it was really strange.  i also go to pet a koala bear, which was a bit of a traumatic experience.  he was sleeping in the tree and when i went up to him, i just went for it and reached for his adorable little paw.  the zoo keeper then came at me and yelled because apparently you are only supposed to pet his furry little butt, so as not to get clawed to death.  i don't know how that would ever happen, seeing as these koalas are stoned on eukalyptus, and can hardly open their eyes, let alone violently attack anyone.

we also got to see some otters, which were very adorable.  the boy otter followed the girl otter around everywhere, and they swam and moved in sync the entire time we watched them, like they were doing some sort of choreographed routine.  it was so strange.  at one point there was a pretty large group of people there, and the boy started barking at people getting too close to his woman.  i will have to check into whether or not otters are one of those animals that mate for life...

28 Feb

where did this week go?!  and the month of february?!  well, this week has been quite the emotional roller coaster... haha, but those stories are more for a box wine/no-pants party so i will save them until that time comes.  i started doing pilates this week, and it is kicking my butt (literally!).  i am still sore.  and kathryn and i went for a run yesterday as well which may/may not have been a good idea.  you see, i haven't run in quite some time now (since i've been here, at the very least, that's like 7 weeks).  so we ran for 30 minutes (approximately 3 miles if you are a slow runner, which i am).  however, i got lost on the way back and went straight instead of taking the turn down the dodgy little alleyway that kathryn went down, so it took me a litttle longer than originally anticipated.  however, i made it home just as the rain started falling, so good for me.

in other news, i had a final in love, sex and relationships and got an A!  go me.  here there don't have grades, they have "marks" so an A is actually a Distinction.  i don't quite know how grades transfer back to the states, or if they even do...?  we will see.

yesterday, kathryn and i went to get bikini waxes (my first ever, ouch!), and then went to this sweet little cafe in market square because i was cravingg some caffeine.  that, too, is becoming one of my new favorite places in the world.  we had breakfast/lunch there again today. yum.  then casey and i went to the beach by justin's park in burleigh heads, which is slowly but surely becoming my new favorite places in life.  we laid on the beach for a while, and then walked around the CBD a bit because we've never actually been down anywhere but the main road where the bus drops us off.  may or may not have done a teensy bit of shopping.  it's veryy cute.  there was even a shop called kids clothes caffeine that is a kids clothes store/coffee shop.  cute idea.

last night we had a party in our common room because we haven't done so in so very long.  the fun thing about the common room is that if you sit there long enough just chillin and playing music eventually people just begin to show up and start hanging out with you.  so we got out our iTunes, played some tourettes (my new favorite card game) and drank some wine.  well, of course we got some visitors after a bit, one of who, turns out, was having a birthday party!  i love a good birthday party, so we of course decided to take the party out to varsity tavern, a short walk from the AC where i live.  fun night.

today i am just chillin, trying to stay out of the sun (even though it is a beautiful day out there!) because i got a little sunburned in the whitsundays last weekend and i am peeling in some less than attractive locations on my body.  i have some schoolwork to get done, and then we might go to a movie, or just stay in and watch a movie, because we have to get up early tomorrow to go to the Australia Zoo!  i am very excited.  i have already promised a number of people pictures of kangaroos, koalas, etc.  i, myself, would like to see a sea turtle (since i did not see one in the whitsundays =( ) and also i would like to see bindi irwin.  i promise to take a ridiculous amount of pictures.

23 Feb

i made it back from the whitsundays last night!  i was just reading through the itinerary that i posted on thursday, and it is really hilarious because there is almost nothing on there that is the same as what we actually did!  well, we did all of those things, but not necessarily in that order (at all!).

on thursday, like i said, we drove to brisbane in a double-decker bus (about an 1 1/2 hour drive) and then flew from brisbane to airlie beach (about an hour flight) where we stayed at the koala adventure resort (don't get too excited, it was a hostel).  i stayed with two of the girls i came here with and two more girls that i have since become friends with, one from boston and one from west virginia.  we didn't know that we were all going on this trip together so that was exciting.  we were all pretty exhausted after all the traveling, so we went to the hostel's bar, morocco's, for some drinks and karaoke, and then went to bed.

the next morning we had to get up super early, eat breakfast, and then get on our yacht for an all-day sailing adventure!  it was a little crowded as we had to fit about 70 people on the boat, but it was the nicest, sunniest day possible so i got a really great tan/sunburn and hung out on the yacht all day.  we ate lunch and then went snorkeling in the great barrier reef and it was beautiful!  we saw all kinds of coral and fishies, but no sea turtles which is what i really wanted to see. =(  hopefully i will get another opportunity.  then we sailed to south molle island, which is currently under construction because they are turning it from a family resort area to koala adventure island, an 18-35 year old party island.  so the island is currently shut down, so we were the only people on the entire island!  it was pretty crazy.  the island was beautiful, but there wasn't much to do so when we got there we had some showers and then had some dinner and drinks at the outdoor bar.  later on we got a little tour of the resort from one of the tour guides, and then went for a dip in the pool.

then next day we had the day to ourselves so we went and hung out by the pool from 10 am to 5 pm.  i was already pretty tan (and by tan, i mean sunburned) from yachting the day before so i tried to stay in the shade as much as possible.  still got some sun though, that's for sure.  and the pool was a nice change from the salty, sticky ocean that i'm used to swimming in.  saturday night we had some more dinner and some more drinks at the outdoor bar.

sunday we had to wake up early again and eat some breakfast, and then catch some high-powered jet boats for a ride out in the ocean.  it was super fun, except that it was pouring rain and since my friends and i were sitting in the front of our boat were were getting pelted with rain.  i felt like i was on deadliest catch or something, but the boat guide gave us some snorkeling gear to wear on our faces so we could keep our eyes open and see all the islands around us.  there are 72 islands in the whitsundays and we got to see a lot of them, although most of them are deserted so there is nothing on them, but you can go camping and hiking on a lot of them.  the islands are beautiful though, they look like scenes out of jurassic park or something.

so after some boat riding we docked at whitehaven beach and had a bite to eat and then sat in the rain for a little while.  the beach is really beautiful, and would probably be even better in the sunshine.  we also got to hike up to one of the most photographed places in the world, the look-out at the top of the whitsundays national park.  it was veryy beautiful.  then the boats took us back to our hostel on south molle island, where we picked up our bags, got back on the boats, and headed back to airlie beach.  we had about an hour to change out of our wet clothes and get some food before getting on the bus back to the airport.  then we were on our way home...

we got back last night at about 10:30.  all of my stuff was soaking wet, so i definitely need to get some laundry done or my room is going to start smelling like aquarium.  other than that, no big plans for the rest of the week. i have a midterm in my love, sex & relationships class tomorrow, so i'm going to have to do some studying for that today.  i don't think it will be too hard though.  then kathryn and i want to go into surfer's on thursday or friday and do some shopping, as we have not really done any of that yet.  then on sunday it's too the australian zoo; i hope i see bindi irwin!

Whitsunday Island Adventure

Thursday:
We take a bus from Bond to the Brisbane airport.  Fly from Brisbane to Mackay.  Spend the night at Beaches Airlie and have a BBQ.

Friday:
After grabbing breakfast, the start of our sailing and island adventure begins.  Our vessle today is not a sailing yacht, but a couple of high powered cruising machines!  If the ride doesn't wake you up, the beautiful locations we see will! Take a dip in the clear water in the crystal clear water on Whitehaven Beach, go searching for elusive turtles and take in the beauty of the area -- at 60 kph!  Whitehaven is a Whitsunday icon, seen in television commercials the world over, with sand like sugar.  After a wet and wonderful day we'll cruise into our Island home for dinner and a great party night.

Saturday:
Today is your day to get to know this island paradise, or just lie on the beach.  Undertake one of the included activities like a small catamaran, paddle ski, tennis, or take one of the awesome hikes on the island and check out the local wildlife.  It's your day to play however you choose, but make sure you save some energy for tonight!

Sunday:
Today we board our Maxi yacht to complete the must-do's of the Whitsundays!  We'll glide around some more of the area, then make a stop to get in the water and do some exploring with a mask on.  Here you'll also have the opportunity to strap on a SCUBA tank and spend some quality time with the locals.  We will spend some time in the afternoon here just soaking up the atmosphere and the sun on our multi million dollar vessel, before our final leg of sailing back into the marina.  We will head back to Airlie Beach to get our bags and then fly back to Brisbane.  Then, a bus back to Bond.

16 Feb

i was debating whether or not to actually write in my blog, but obvi i decided to do so.  it's been raining a lot lately so i feel like i haven't been on a lot of adventures or anything.  i guess there's a hurricane out there in the ocean, which is what caused the flooding in cairns, but now it is moving down the coast and we are feeling the repercussions.  i've heard it makes for really good surf, but that does not concern me so i just have to sit here and watch the rain from my window.

um... on thursday there was a "supposedly" famous australian dj, john course, that came and spun at don's tavern.  that was fun.  there was dancing. on friday kathryn, casey and i went to see He's Just Not That Into You at the pacific fair theatre.  casey and i were really proud of ourselves because we knew exactly how to get there after our first adventure.  then when we got back, we watched the movie eraserhead for some reason i still have no explanation for.  it is the worst movie ever, if you ever have the misfortune of being submitted to that torture, i am deeply sorry. i cannot say any more...

on saturday it was still raining so i attempted to do some homework and laundry, but that did not go well.  saturday night a big group of us went to melbas in surfers paradise.  we called a cab that fits 7 people for a group of 12, so you can imagine the chaos that ensued.  it was a fun night though.  there's a bunch of vendors right around the corner from the club, so when we were waiting for the cab home (and by cab i actually mean maxi taxi) we got kebabs and pizza.  delish.  so far, kebabs are the only thing that seem like an "australian food" to me.  don't be confused and think shish-kebabs cause that is not what they are.  it's like... a bunch of vegetables (and meat, if you like) wrapped up in this pita-type thing and then covered in some sort of ranch-cucumber sauce.  they kind of remind me of gyros.  kind of.  but better.  anyway, they're everywhere so if you ever come to australia you absolutely must try one.  and when you try one, you will want to have more...

on sunday it was finally sunny!  we went to coollangata to a beach called green stone or something, which i haven't been to yet.  it was really nice, and i want to go back to look around at the shops and stuff some more.  i guess one of the founder's of billabong lives in a mansion on some hill there.  i saw it from the highway.  billabong is a really big deal here, there's a billabong store on nearly every street corner, i kid you not.  it's so expensive though, a little part of me dies every time i pass one.  anyway... we only got to stay at the beach for about an hour because then it started to RAIN AGAIN!  ridiculous.

at this point, we were really needing to come up with some creative ways to have fun, so we went on a walk around campus in the rain.  it was nice because it never really gets cold here, so even when it rains it was still pretty warm.  also, the campus is a lot bigger than i originally thought.  or something, i don't know, but i really had no idea where i was...  then we watched the sixth sense which i haven't seen since it came out.  i believe i was in middle school, maybe even younger.  it was still scary though.

today is monday so i didn't have any class.  i had some homework to get done, and a group presentation to finish since we are presenting on wednesday.  i hope the weather clears up soon because we are going yachting in the whitsunday islands and SCUBA diving in the great barrier reef this weekend.  i hope i see a sea turtle.

11 Feb

i hate to say it, but i've actually been enjoying my classes this week.  granted, i only have three of them, but each class has a lecture and tutorial, so technically i have 6 classes every week.  yesterday (tuesday) i had sex, love, and relationships and we learned about sexual behaviours and sex positions.  when our lecturer got to the "advanced positions" (and yes, there were pictures and diagrams) she said something like "if you're talented to figure out these ones, you don't need to be taking this class!".  it was hilarious.  i haven't had the tutorial yet (that's this afternoon) but my roommate already told me that we discuss the pros/cons of the different sexual positions.  we also watched a video about scientists who tried to play matchmaker by matching people's DNA and face shapes.  it was veryy interesting, even though in the end it ended up not working out so great.

in my australian pop culture class we are learning about the significance of the beach this week.  we watched a documentary called Bra Boys about one of the largest and most powerful surf gangs in australia, the bra boys.  it was very intense and interesting and i highly suggest seeing it, especially if you're interested in ever traveling to australia.  surf gangs are one of those things that most people just straight up don't have any idea exist.  at least, i didn't.  also, my group for this class gives our presentation for this class about australian tourism next week.  i just spent 45 minutes in the library working on the powerpoint by myself.  i know... i'm impressed too. =]

even my sensation & perception class, which is a two-hour long lecture and then an hour-long lab class, is interesting.  possibly because i feel like i'm actually learning something, besides just listening to the prof. (ahem, kovack-lesh) ready off of a powerpoint for an hour.  although, i'm not going to lie, i left after the first hour today...

so... i was having a chat yesterday with some other american study abroad students about how strange we feel like our experience is compared to our other friends who are abroad.  i've been looking at a lot of my other friends pictures of old building and day tours they've been going on, and i don't have any of those kinds of things.  mine are mostly of parties and the beach and an occasional hike in byron bay.  they seemed to think that we weren't getting an "australian" experience while we were here, but i think that's so strange.  we're going to an australian university, meeting all kinds of australians and other people from around the world, and yeah, the differences between australian culture and american culture are subtle, but they are definitely still there.

that is all... xoxo

9 Feb

went to burleigh heads beach on saturday and laid around for a few hours.  it was magnificent.  a little windy, so once again i was completely covered in sand when i got back to school.  i don't know how that always happens to me.

got invited to a party in the common room of the Accommodation Center, where i live by some girls who live down the hall.  it's really adorable because we've met this girl, jorja, a couple of times now and think she is just the greatest.  it just melted my little black heart that she would think to invite casey and i to her shindig.  so she and her roommate, kasey, were the ones hosting the party.  well, on the facebook invitation it said "champagne, chocolate, strawberries, and chick flicks" so i was expecting some girly bonding night with a plethora of 17-year-olds.  however, about an hour into drinking and eating the $95 worth of snacks jorja provided a bunch of other kids started showing up and it turned into yet another booze-fest in the common room.  we played "never have i ever" (never a good idea when making new friends) and hung out until the wee hours of the night.

the funny thing, or should i say, one of the many funny things about Uni in australia is that kids here graduate from high school when they are 17, so they are freshman here when they are 17.  however, the drinking age isn't 18.  doesn't stop them.  they're just like freshman in the states, except 17.  so i have found myself hanging out with a lot of 17 and 18 year olds lately.  which is hilarious for so many reasons, not least of which that my younger sister is older than about half of them.  you know what though, i don't even mind it.  until they start talking about how excited they are for their 18th birthdays.  then it gets a little weird.  i just have to keep telling myself i'm not REALLY hanging out with high schoolers...

also, i got an email from my mother asking me to inform her of my whereabouts seeing as there are some pretty massive natural disasters happening around here these days.  however, do not fear.  the bush fires are in Victoria, a state much farther south of me, around melbourne.  the flooding is in northern queensland, which is much farther north of me, around cairns.  however, my friend kathryn and some other people have been in cairns all weekend and are safe as far as i know, but may be stuck there long than expected due to the flooding.  keep all those people that have been killed in the fires and floods and their families in your thoughts and your prayers, but don't worry, i'm safe.

7 Feb

on thursday night the business faculty hosted "Palaver: Vegas".  you may be asking yourself, "what is a palaver?" as i was doing, and continue to do, the exact same thing to this day.  however, thanks to urbandictionary.com, i may have an answer.  they list three possibilities:
1. fuss/bother
2. idle chat/idle talk
3. a meeting. a brainstorming or counseling session.
now, do any of these possibilities sound like a fun thing to do on a thursday night?  absolutely not, which is why i am still incredibly confused about the event i attended.  however, if i had to guess (which i often do) i would go with option 3, as it sounds the most business-like.

this palaver even was vegas themed, so don's tavern was decked out with some pretty intense decorations, including an eiffel tower, a little white wedding chapel, and black jack tables.  also, everyone had to dress up in their best vegas-y attire.  it was kind of like prom/formal except that for the $35 ticket we got free booze for 3 1/2 hours.  nice.  at 11:00 buses picked us up to take us to the "official after-party" at the drink nightclub in surfer's paradise. i've been there a couple of times now, and it's not my favorite, but i was in a dancing mood so...  the free buses don't bring us back to school until 3:30 am and there has only been one night so far that i've made it that late.  so, i had to catch a cab home, after picking up some delish pizza to eat on the ride.  our cab driver was a very hilarious middle-eastern man who was cranking hannah montana the entire ride home.  when i commented about his taste in music he explained that he made his daughter burn him a copy of the music she was listening to so he could check it out, and then somehow he felt he was keeping a close eye on her.  i assured him that if his 16 year old daughter was listening to miley cyrus he really had nothing to worry about.  looking back, that could have been bad advice...

needless to say, friday morning was a rough one.  casey and i had big plans to go to the beach, but the thought of riding the bus anywhere made me want to crawl back into my bed in the fetal position.  we optioned to lay by the pool instead, which really, not such a bad plan b.  it was a really hot day and i got my first sunburn since i've been here.  it's not bad, but still a little embarrassing.  you never see any of the aussie's tromping around with a sunburned... anything.

as it turned out, we were not the only ones who were having a rough day yesterday, so it seemed most of the campus was taking friday night easy.  this is when we decided that we were going to see a movie.  not just any movie.  i really wanted to see twilight.  i've recently become obsessed with the books after reading the first one on the plane ride here.  i'm now about 1/3 of the way through the second.  anyway, as usual, this supposedly wholesome activity had to turn into a bit of an adventure, as does anything i seem to do these days...

the movie was at 9:20 at the movie theatre attached to the pacific fair mall.  in order to get there in time, we checked the bus schedule which said the bus left here at 8:58.  perfect.  well, we got to the bus stop and that schedule said the bus didn't leave until 9:05.  okay, it only takes about 10 minutes to get to pac fair as long as there aren't too many stops, so we should still be fine.  the bus finally arrives and we hop on, hoping that we still make it to the movie on time.  we arrive at the mall with about 10 minutes till the movie starts, and we're pretty impressed with ourselves at this point.  until we get off of the bus and realize that the mall is closed.  locked, in fact.  so we decide we need to find this movie theatre by foot, and begin to walk around the side of this mall, which, did i mention is the biggest mall in the southern hemisphere?  right. well, we get about halfway around one side and come across another entry. locked.  so we head back and by now only have about 3 minutes until the movie is supposed to start.  luckily there's a bus sitting at the stop, so i hop on and ask the bus driver where the theatre is.  which one? she asks me.  um, the one at this mall you idiot (i left the you idiot out of it, i think).  luckily there was another man standing there talking to the idiot bus driver so he pointed us in the right direction which, turned out, was right behind us.  when we finally made it to the theatre, there may have been cheering and high-fiving.  it was that exciting.  and, also luckily, nothing around here ever starts on time so we didn't even miss any of the previews.  the movie itself was deec (the book was better, obvi) but the wholesome night itself was such a success that i may have to try it again soon...

Byron Bay

casey and i left for byron bay at noon on friday.  it was quite an adventure to say the least...  we had to take a bus from bond to surfer's paradise (which is "town" basically) and then we ate dinner while we waited to catch the surfer's/byron bay express at 2:00.  we arrived in byron at about 4:30 and then we had to find the "bus" to the aquarius backpacker's motel where we would be staying for the weekend.  so we were wandering semi-aimlessly (theme for the entire weekend, turns out) and we come across a van that says aquarius on it.  so we kind of stand there staring at it, and this german man comes up to us and says, "need a ride?  get in."  we have no other options, so we jump into the van.  luckily, we made it safely.

once we arrived at aquarius we unpacked our stuff, "met" some of our "roommates", who i think were german and didn't speak any english, at least not to us.  the girl winked at me.  more than once.  once we were all checked in and everything we trekked into town to have a beer because travel is exh
austing.  we passed the great northern hotel who offered us $5 coronas, and who can pass up such a deal?  certainly not 2 famished backpackers.  so we h
ung out at this hotel bar for a while, watching locals and people playing pool.   finally we realized we were starving so we walked down to the beach hotel, which we got a small taste of the last time we were in byron.  we ordered the most delish nachos i have ever tasted, and then there was live music which just about makes me the happiest person alive.

so we're standing near the stage, swaying to the music and there's this very strange group of boys/men (?) sitting near us and casey looks over and says she thinks one of them is pretty cute.  she must have been making some major googly eyes or something because he comes up to us and asks if we want to sit down.  i was perfectly content to continue swaying, but casey accepted so we sat down at this table.  he introduced us to his friends, but i'm not so good with the names.  he's the only one i remember (byron bill) besides his very attractive friend i dubbed "sexy m" (i think his name is matt).  well, byron bill chatted some more, and i sat there pretty entranced by the music and staring at sexy m.  somehow the conversation got around to what we were up to the rest of other weekend, and byron bill insisted that he give us a surfing lesson.  now, i'm all about trying new things in my life, but the last surfing lesson i took did not end well so i was hesitant.  casey, however, was all about going to the beach the next day so she gave him her number and then we left shortly after, not really expecting this strange man to actually call.

we got back to our hostel eventually, after wandering down to the beach for a while, and went to bed.  the next morning we woke up to some veryy strange sights that i am positive can only happen at a backpacker's.  casey and i were sleeping in top bunks across from each other, and i pointed down to the bunk below her and informed her that there were two people sleeping in the bed below her.  spooning.  i don't know if you've ever slept in a hostel before but these beds are small and not comfortable, so i do not know how or why you would be sleeping in bed with another person.  plus it was about 100 degrees and there was no AC so it was really hot and sticky.  which is probably why the man sleeping on the bunk under me was naked.

so i got up to shower and when i got out casey informed me that byron bill had, in fact, given her a call and told her he would take us to "a place overlooking the ocean".  creepy?  maybe to the average person, but this sounded like a really fun idea to us.  once we got ready we went to main beach where we met byron bill, sexy m, and the rest of the posse.  they surfed and body boarded and casey and i sat on the beach and watched because it was winding and the water was freezing and to be honest i'm not a big fan of water sports.  then came time to go to broken head - the place overlooking the ocean.  so we hopped into byron bill's truck (if you are sitting there reading this and thinking i die at the end of this story, do not worry, i am still alive) and he drove us up and around this windy road until finally we came to a "hiking trail" where we then walked up some more.  there was a small time during this adventure that i thought to myself, we have no idea who this person is, he is probably going to kill us.  but then we got to the top, byron bill laid out his towel, and cracked open a few beers.  everything was going to be okay.

we returned safely back to town just in time to grab some lunch at some Oz-Mex restaurant where we got the most delish burritos ever.  we had already taken off our shoes and were walking around the streets barefoot, so the only next logical step was to take a seat next to some skateboarders eating pizza and gorge our faces with burritos while onlookers stared at us like the crazy byron hippies we wish we were.  after the burritos, some very serious beach time followed, and then we went back to get ready to go out for the night.  we went to cheeky monkey's for dinner and free champagne, then checked out the club scene (not so good) and then ended the night back at the beach hotel because, really, it is my favorite place in the whole entire world.  sunday we had to go home, and i have to say i already want to go back.  if i drop out of school and move to byron bay, no one would judge...

Australia Day

i can't believe i forgot to talk about Australia Day in my last post!  Australia Day was on Monday.  it's a public holiday so everyone gets off of work and school, except for Bond Uni, of course (sound like a certain Ripon College?).  supposedly the reason we didn't get off of school is because it's an international school and only about 50% of the students here are australian.  i don't know why that makes a difference, but alas, we had class.  well, everyone who has classes on monday. i certainly do not.  random fact: bond uni is only about 20 years old!  that's a really really new school compared to RC at least.  that would explain why everything here is so new and nice still.  no renovation necessary.  it was also voted the #1 school in australia for two years in a row.  wow.  anyway...

australia day is like 4th of july for those of us from the states.  it celebrates the date when the british colonized here in 1901.  (don't i sound smart?)  it's kind of a controversial holiday because it also appears to glorify the fact that the british basically kicked the aborigines out of their homeland (sound familiar?).  whatever the reason, there was much celebration at bond university on monday.  don's tavern, the bar on campus, had a big BBQ and free beer/wine/champagne.  there were even fireworks!  it was pretty sweeet.

today my roommate, casey, and i are heading to byron bay for the weekend.  it's our first adventure out on our own away from campus so it's veryy exciting.  we have to take the bus into surfer's, then catch a different bus at the transit station, and then it's about an hour to byron bay.  once we get there we're staying a hostel, the aquarius, for $36/night.  good deal?  i don't know yet.  we looked up a lot of places and this is the cheapest one we could find.  an australian told us that a better idea would be to rent a big van and drive down there and just park on the beach for the weekend.  that sounds pretty sketch to me, and therefore we're going to have to try it...  anyway, i'm sure i will come back on sunday with some good stories so stay posted.

29/1/09

it rained on sunday so we didn't really get to do anything too exciting, except work out which is always a hoot.  they play australia's version of vh1's top 40 countdown or whatever over and over on the big screen in there, so i've seen the video for lady gaga's poker face about 1 million times now.  even in the clubs and on my favorite radio station, hot tomato, they play the same songs over and over... except in the clubs they're all set to techno beats.  goooood timess.  you can check out this link if you would like to see what the top 40 is currently: http://top40-charts.com/chart.php?cid=4 however i've downloaded all the music so you luckies will get to listen to it every second of every day upon my return.

i took a spinning class which included gay/not gay(?) floral-print man from the pool as the instructor and some strobe lights and a disco ball.  that might have been monday night.  then i started my two days of classes on tuesday which included two hours of love, sex, & relationships and three hours of australian pop culture.  we watch a lot of movies in these lectures and i take a lot of naps...  then on wednesday i had a fulllll day of classes from 10 am to 5 pm.  sensation and perception = my death.

last night we joined B.A.S.I.C. (beer and social intercourse club).  there was free beer.  that is all.  oh, and casey and i are going back to byron bay this weekend.  yayy.

24/1/09

i finally figured out my classes, i think.  scheduling is very confusing around here and there is a pretty serious lack of communication, to the point that i didn't even know if i was even enrolled for classes come monday when classes started.  but i switched some things and figured things out and it just so happens i only have classes on tuesdays and wednesdays.  i know, rough life.  i have no idea what i'm going to do the rest of the days. lay by the pool?  sweet life.

last night was the pub crawl.  we started at 3pm at don's tavern on campus.  moved to robina tavern, and then the mermaid tavern where there was live music and a dance floor.  i've never been to either of those places before, so that was nice.  they're more pubs, less nightclubs like the rest of the places we "crawled" to.  nightclubs are fun, but not necessarily at 6pm.  after the mermaid tavern we went to platinum, where i've been once before.  the bedroom was next, which is the most sketch place i've ever been in my life.  it smelled like sex & feet and instead of seating they have beds to "sit on" and stripper poles on the dance floor.  next was drink, where we went the first night that we were here.  that's when casey and i decided pub crawling was exhausted and we took the bus home.  this was approximately 8pm.  the crawl continued on to melbas, where i've been before as well.  however, casey and i had to shower and change and then we met up with some people and took a cab back into surfer's and met up with the crawlers back at melbas.  i had my first kebab at a stand around the corner as well and it was delicious.  there was a really strange, old, drunk man who approached us mid-kebab and tried to get us to come party with him and his "crew", but we declined, needing to get back to the club because we had completely lost track of the rest of our group.

today a bunch of girls went into the beach in burleigh head to do some wholesome activities and document them for facebook, so everyone knew that we did more than just party here...  we just laid out in the sun, read, listened to music, and slept all afternoon.  it was glorious.  then the other girls left and casey, kathryn, and i went on an adventure to find some food and i had my first fish n chips in australia.  they were pretty delicious.  then we had to wait a really long time for the bus because we've never been to burleigh before so we didn't know the schedule.  oh well.  we're pondering the idea of going out to dinner tonight, but otherwise it's going to be pretty chill considering the amount of partying we've done the last couple days.

22/1

i would like to say that i've been extremely busy and haven't had time to update, but that really isn't the case.  i started classes on monday, but not really because i didn't have any classes.  i had two classes on tuesday, lecture and tutorial for love, sex, and relationships.  we watched a history channel video called the sexual century and then the tutorial was class "activities".  imagine what you will.  i had my other classes too, but they were not as exciting.  two hour lectures are pretty rough when i would rather be sitting by the pool or going to the beach.

in other exciting news, we were having a little party in the common room on monday night and my roommate comes out and confronts me and casey and asks us in front of everyone if we would mind switching rooms because we have "different lifestyles".  at the same time the girls across the hall were having some living issues so they decided they were going to kick us out and they were going to live together in my room and i was going to  have to move out and live with casey.  which turns out is fine, but still really awkward.  i've never been kicked out of my own room.  so yesterday alicia and i switched rooms and it was easily the most awkward experience of my life.  we all acted really chipper like it was perfectly normal to get kicked out of your room, but let me tell you this is not normal.

but no fear, this arrangement will work out much better for everyone involved.  well, at least for casey and me, i don't really care about the feelings of those other fun haters.  so after i moved in we went on a mission to get a couch for more seating so we stole one out of the common room and moved it into our room.  we had to stack a dresser on the desk to make room for it, but it's pretty awesome.  gatherings will ensue.

tuesday night was a law-student sponsored "drink the pub dry" event at melbas so that was pretty fun.  lots of dancing and being jolly.  friday night is a pub crawl.  i'm on the blue team.  we start at 3pm.  saturday we're (hopefully still) taking a trip to nimbin.  stories to follow i'm sure.

19/1/09

wow, i can't believe my first week here is already over.  classes start today, but i have a really rough life and don't have classes mondays or fridays.  so i start classes tomorrow.  i have one from 9-11 and one from 4-5.  wednesday i have class throughout the day from 8 am until 8 pm.  thursday class from 4-6.  i don't know what i'm going to do with all my mondays and fridays...  today i am meeting with the student travel agent to talk about going to sydney for mardi gras.  the school offers a package that includes transportation and lodging and all that stuff, but i went on a trip with the school yesterday and didn't love being in a tour group.  having to wait around for other people and meeting at scheduled times isn't really my thing.  so a bunch of us might get together and just have a go at it ourselves.

the trip i went on yesterday was to byron bay, about an hour bus ride from robina, which is where i live.  byron is kind of an old hippie town... it sort of reminded me of key west.  aka i loved it.  we took surf lessons in the morning, and then got to walk around and do a little shopping/people watching in the afternoon.  then we took a hike up to a lighthouse, which is the easterly most part of australia.  then we stopped at a pub called the beach hotel, which i guess is really famous although i'm not exactly sure why.  but there were heaps of people there so it must be a pretty big deal.  at the beach hotel we ran into our surf instructors from the morning, and they told us we should stay and hang out.  apparently sunday afternoon is a really big party time here.  we had to come back to school with the tour group of course, but he invited us back and said we could stay at the surf shop so i think that's definitely going to have to  happen.

so now it's time for reality, classes and such.  it's going to be very interesting to see how classes work here and professors and stuff like that.  not too many big plans for the week so far.  the school is hosting a pub crawl in surfer's paradise tomorrow night.  and some aussie boys we met with a car said they were making a trip to nimbin this weekend (nimbin is, apparently, the amsterdam of australia, whatever that means...) so we might tag along with them.  we'll see.

17/1/09

i got a cell phone the other day which may or may not have been a good idea.  it's prepaid, and i probably won't be making international calls because they are ridiculously expensive (like everything else...) but it will be good to have in case i get lost or locked out of my room or something.

so funny story.  we met the president of the Bond Uni surf club yesterday and he was telling us all about how we absolutely need to join (no frat boys allowed...? that's what he said.  i don't get it) and all this.  well then later on we were laying out by the pool and he was down there doing laps in a brightly colored/flowered speedo.  cute.  he came over and chatted with us for a while, pretty much telling us his entire life story including how much he loves going to Sydney for Mardi Gras because he loves the GLBT community, and he was telling us how he used to be a bouncer at a transvestite bar.  and he's the spinning class instructor here on campus.  a very interesting human being.  but anyway, one of the girls, casey, who happens to be in love with any man who is old and not american (i think this guy was about 30 and australian) instantly decided she was in love with him.  now, i had a sneaking suspicion that our new friend might be gay, but i didn't say anything about it until kathryn's roommate confirmed that he had, indeed, told her he was gay.  why didn't he tell us?  well... maybe he was hinting around at it with all of his story telling?  moral of the story, casey was pretty distraught, but although my gay-dar is pretty much nonexistent i'd have to say i called that one.

last night they played Anchorman out on the front lawn by the lake and a heap of people went.  it was extremely wholesome and adorable, minus all the boozing (or pissing, as they call it here.  i'm not really sure how i feel about that).

there's three or four different places to eat here on campus.  lake side makes made-to-order pasta and salad and that's usually where i get coffee & a bagel in the morning for breakfast.  juicy bits is a cafe that i have yet to go to because we can't use our meal plan and it's really expensive.  mostly just the professors and post-grads go there because they have real lives with jobs and money. and then there's the brasserie which is like commons-style food.  that was the only place that was open today, so we went to brunch.  the food quality there is pretty much equal to the commons in ripon, so don't be too jealous.  however, my personal favorite place to eat, cafe bond, is so much better.  they have wraps and sandwiches and burgers and stuff like that and... smoothies.  pretty much makes my life.  i'm trying to limit myself to only one per day but it's difficult.  really difficult.

so we went to the bra for brunch this morning, and then to kurrawa beach in broadbeach.  we had to take the bus to the mall, pacific fair, and then walk to the beach from there which is maybe like half a mile away.  i hate public transportation, it really makes me hostile.  but on the way there kathryn got hit on by an 80 year old woman from scotland which was pretty hysterical.  unfortunately we were only at the beach for about ten minutes because it was really windy and overcast and was starting to rain.  my body was completely covered in sand when i got back and i had to take shower number two of the day immediately.  i'm getting ready to go out for dinner tonight, and then hang out with some people on the other side of campus, in a res hall called "the blocks".  it's going to have to be an early one tonight for sure because we're going to byron bay tomorrow and we're leaving at 7 am.  ew.

15/1/09

to pick up where i left off, last night was fun.  after dinner we went to the liquor store to buy some delicious australian wine.  thinking we might be classy, we then went next door to the grocery store to pick up some plastic wine glasses, bottles of water, and a delicious chocolate treat called tim tam which is basically a chocolate cookie covered with chocolate filling covered with chocolate frosting.  or caramel if you prefer.  yum.

it's still taking some time to adjust to the time difference and what not, so i've been pretty tired.  decided not to go out last night, so some of us were just going to hang out in the lounge on our floor and drink our wine out of our classy new wine glasses.  however, it turns out the 4th floor of building 9 is quite the hoppin' place, so we ended up with about 20 people squashed onto the four couches, and enjoying a wide variety of beverages including something called RTDs (ready-to-drinks) which are what appear to be beer cans with pre-mixed drinks like rum and coke.  interesting...

people are extremely friendly here, and are from all over the world.  for example, last night there were australians, americans (everywhere from san diego to jersey), malaysians, canadians... you get the idea.  well with so many of us it got a little noisy so when security did rounds at 11:00 we got asked to be quiet (good to know i'm too loud in this country too...).  to avoid getting kicked out of school so early in the semester, some girls invited us all to their room at the end of the hall, which is the most ridiculous suite i have ever seen in my life.  it's a kitchen, living area, bathroom (which they call a toilet.  we asked for a bathroom at the airport and they looked at us like we were crazy for wanting to take a bath at the airport), two bedrooms with bunked beds, and a balcony.  trust me, the rest of the living accommodations (including my own) are not that nice.

today we're going to go into town to get cell phones.  last night we thought that we had a really good idea and could all share one cell phone, giving out the number randomly because how hilarious would that be.  well, in the sober light of morning i decided that perhaps i would need my own cell phone with my own number to contact only who i wished and not some scary, random strangers.  so i'm going to go ahead and do that.  staying out the sun today because yesterday was pretty intense, and my little nose is a little burned.  turns out there's holes in the ozone over australia and we're close to the equator so not everyone (including myself) was prepared for how intense the sun would be.

tonight is the tight n bright party at don's tavern where i will be wearing all of my neon-colored spandex and tights together in one ridiculous outfit.  it's like they made this party especially for me.  i will keep you posted.

I Made It!!

oh i have so much to say i don't even know where to begin.  i left from green bay on saturday and traveled with three girls from SNC.  it was really nice to have people to travel with because LAX international is huge and i would've gotten very lost/bored during the 5 hour layover.

unfortunately, my luggage decided to stay in LA when i left for brisbane, so it did not arrive with me in australia when i did, approximately 7:30 am on Monday.  so i had to come to school with just my carry-on which, thanks mom, i decided to pack an extra set of clothing and some toiletries, etc.

so we took what ended up being a 2 hour bus ride from the airport to Uni (like that aussie lingo?) and the bus driver just dropped us off at the front entrance and was like, okay enjoy your stay bye!  so we had to lug all of our stuff around looking for what we were supposed to do because turns out, we just arrived in the country.  when we finally figured out what was going on  we got our keys and such, unloaded are baggage (which went quickly for me) and then took a few trips to some stores to buy things such as towels, alarm clocks, and clean underwear.  these things are not only incredibly difficult to come by but also extremely expensive.  for example, $15 bottles of shampoo, 2 for $20 towels, and $60 dresses at target.

well, that night the school was hosting a "traditional" aussie party where we were provided singlets to wear, thank goodness, because i didn't have any clean clothes.  a singlet, btw, is like a long, sleeveless t-shirt which is neither attractive or long enough to cover my cheeks (you know the ones i'm talking about) so i had a decision to make.  either make my first impression on the country a strong one by not wearing pants, or wear the dress i had been traveling in for the third day in a row.  i went with the dress.

drinks, p.s., are also very expensive costing approximately $3-$5 for a pint of beer.  luckily those of us newly arrived academics (what they call students and profs) were jet-laggged and dehydrated and it didn't take much for us.  the party ended at midnight (by then, i had been awake for approximately 48 hours and crossed about 4 time zones) and we were provided with a free drink coupon and they wrangled us all onto 2 buses (standing room only) and carted us off into the city where we partied at a nightclub until 3:30, when the buses then picked us back up.

ok, well, the plan was that you were supposed to stay until 3:30 but after one of my new friends got beyonce-booty-danced on by some american boy (so embarrassed) and licked in the face we decided to call it a night early and went home around 2 am.  this presented a bit of a problem because we still had an hour and a half until the buses came back.  so we asked the bouncers how you get a cab around here and they pointed us in the direction of what appeared to be a dark alley.  we didn't know better, maybe they keep cabs in dark alleys here?  so we walked and walked and maybe this wasn't the best decision but the story ends well so don't worry too much.  eventually we came to a road with actual cars and caught a cab fairly easy.  turns out there isn't a huge call for cabs at 2 on a tuesday morning.

we ended up paying $30 for a cab ride that couldn't have been more than 10 or 15 minutes, but split between the 4 of us it wasn't too bad i guess.  needless to say i slept pretty well that night, but needed to get early the next morning to take care of administration stuff.  ask me to see my student ID picture that i took the next morning if you ever need a laugh.  it may or may not look like a mug shot.

after eating some delish food for lunch (the food is REALLY good here, especially the smoothies.  i think mango is my fave so far.  yum), we went down to the pool for the rest of the afternoon, went on a campus tour, and then MY LUGGAGE CAME.  so i happily unpacked and then make the executive decision that if i was going to survive the rest of my life, i would have to get some sleep at some point, so i made it an early night.

today, also known as wednesday by the water, was a BBQ by the olympic sized pool outside my dorm room.  and by BBQ i actually mean breakfast sausages wrapped in white bread with some mystery sauce pretending to be ketchup and chunks of fried potato disguised as chips.

plans for tonight are still pending, and as all of you over in the US are probably still sleeping, i will keep you posted.  don't miss me too much.
